Launch speed is now a launcher fight

The Xbox PC app has a new pitch: it opens quicker. Microsoft says the updated build now with Xbox Insiders launches up to 60% faster, which drops Xbox into the launcher-speed race Epic and Steam have been running lately. If your library lives in Game Pass, this is the preview worth installing, and for anyone speccing a machine around it, our PC Builder is a fair place to start.

Three speed claims, one asterisk

In an Xbox Wire post dated 5 November 2026, Jason Beaumont, VP of Xbox Experiences, lays out the numbers. All three carry an asterisk: the results are based on Microsoft’s own testing and may vary by device, internet connection, system configuration and usage.

“Up to” is doing the heavy lifting, and Microsoft hasn’t published a baseline in seconds. Still, it’s the right thing to be bragging about: a launcher you open every evening should not make you wait.

The Library and friends list got the real work

Speed aside, the changes we’d notice daily are the housekeeping ones. The Library gets simpler navigation, updated filters and new ways to organize games. Friends and social features move into the main navigation, so seeing what friends are playing, starting a chat or joining a party is one click closer. Search now spans games (installed titles and add-ons included) and people, and game cards, Home, Settings and animations have been refreshed.

PC Gamer’s Andy Chalk called the friends change welcome, saying that reconnecting with his Sea of Thieves crew was “kind of a headache compared to the super-simplicity of Steam.” We agree that’s the gap worth closing. Steam owners can already shuffle installs between their own PCs, as our guide to Steam local network game transfers shows, so Xbox has some catching up to do on polish.

Web and cloud get a matching refresh

The refreshed Xbox web experience reaches more players automatically over the next few weeks, or right now if you head to play.xbox.com. A new Library tab gathers every game you can stream, whether you own it or reach it through Game Pass, with sorting and filters for recently played, genre and input options. Desktop mode uses the space on PCs and larger displays better, and you can pick dark or light mode plus five new high-contrast options. Microsoft is also starting to bring the refreshed look and navigation to Xbox cloud gaming apps on supported TVs and VR headsets.

Grab it if Game Pass is home

We’d install the Insider build if Game Pass is your main library: the Library, search and friends changes matter more day to day than a quicker boot. You’ll need the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows PC to join the program. If you’re Steam-first, nothing here is a reason to switch. Chalk doubts faster loading will convince many PC gamers to pick Xbox’s app over Steam when they don’t have to, and points out that Steam recently shipped its own update promising better load times.

That’s a fair doubt, and it’s why we’d watch the next step, not the percentages: whether this build leaves the Insider ring intact and as quick on ordinary hardware as Microsoft’s testing suggests. For the wider Windows picture, see Ryzen AI 500 and Microsoft’s Windows AI roadmap.
