World of Warcraft: Forever is live, and it’s built to stay

World of Warcraft: Forever is live: a permanent level 1–60 home beside Classic WoW, with 1,000+ new quests, new zones and a new Skyborne race.

A permanent home for Classic

World of Warcraft: Forever is live worldwide, and it is not a seasonal server or a limited-time event. Blizzard calls it a permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW: a level 1–60 journey across the original continents, set after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core.

The headline numbers are big. Blizzard says the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor get new and reimagined zones and more than 1,000 new quests, with Mount Hyjal, Shen’dralas, the Riverglades and Zephras Isle as the named newcomers. Zephras Isle is a level 1–12 start for the new Skyborne race, with a Horde-aligned Windshaper path (which can become Shaman) and an Alliance-aligned High-Order Skyborne path (which can become Mages).

Your first two choices

The first login asks you to pick an experience preset. Classic means standard-definition character models, quest markers off, one-bag off and transmog off. Enhanced flips those on and adds high-definition models. Blizzard’s advice is blunt: if you’re unsure, start with Enhanced, because you can change individual settings later under Game Menu > Options. We walk through the screen in our guide to the first-login choices.

Then comes the ruleset, which replaces the usual realm list: Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay PvP, with Hardcore promised for some point after launch. Characters also get a two-part name that is unique within a region, a sign of how realmless this version of Azeroth is meant to be.

What’s coming next

Launch is only the first step. Nine new five-player dungeons cover levels 13 to 60, and a 15 versus 15 battleground, the Darkspear Islands, is already in the lineup. On December 9, level 60 players get three raids: Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Onyxia’s Lair. There’s also an account-wide Legacy System, a shared Camping system and gamepad support, all listed in Blizzard’s launch post.

Here’s our view. Blizzard has spent years being asked to let people play WoW at the pace they remember, and a permanent set of rules with a real content roadmap is a better answer than another one-off server. The Classic and Enhanced presets mean newcomers and lapsed players can pick the version that feels right on day one. That is a good way to avoid splitting a community in two.

We can’t tell you how launch day is running: Blizzard’s post doesn’t include queue times or population figures, so we won’t guess. The real test is whether the 1,000-plus new quests hold up at level 40, not level 4. If you’re tracking how other long-running online games handle big shifts, see our take on FFXIV’s Evercold delay.
