A crawler that moves one square at a time

The Underkeep dungeon crawler moves one grid square at a time, fights in turns and comes with a built-in automap, which in 2026 feels almost defiant. Rake in Grass, the Prague-based studio behind it, launched it on Steam on 5 November 2026 at $19.50, 15% off the $22.95 list price.

It arrives in a market where plenty of the noise is about live-service loops. Underkeep is a single-player game, and Rake in Grass promises 15–20 hours of exploration, challenging encounters and hidden secrets. That is a refreshingly finite pitch, and we think the launch discount is the easy way in.

Four heroes, turn by turn

The studio names Dungeon Master, Lands of Lore, Eye of the Beholder, Wizardry and Ishar among its inspirations, and presents the lot through hand-drawn graphics and a hand-crafted world. You assemble a party of four adventurers with unique abilities and spells, then gear them up to create synergies.

Combat is turn-based. Rake in Grass promises dozens of monsters, enemy weaknesses to exploit and a fight that changes as it unfolds, while Steam’s page adds that stamina and mana need managing. Its pitch for the whole thing is blunt: plan well and you’re rewarded, play carelessly and you’re punished.

Old frustrations, trimmed

Steam describes “thoughtful conveniences that remove the old frustrations without losing the heart,” and the clearest example is the automap, which supports custom markers for mysteries, locked doors and places you want to revisit. For a genre built on getting lost, that is a quiet kindness.

Controls are a small wrinkle. The studio’s release promises full controller support for playing from the couch, but Steam’s feature list says Partial Controller Support, so read the store page before you settle in with a pad. For another party-based RPG on the same question, see our Pillars of Eternity controller support piece.

What $19.50 gets you

Underkeep is on Windows only, through Steam and GOG. The Steam US price on 7 November 2026 was $19.50 against a $22.95 list price, and discounts can change. Steam also lists a demo, which is where we’d start if you’re unsure the grid-and-turns style is for you.

Rake in Grass has released more than 20 games across 8 platforms, including the Rampage Knights and Jets’n’Guns series, so this isn’t a first attempt. Whether Underkeep earns a spot beside the picks in our best PC games of 2026 guide depends on how the full game holds up. If you want to see what else is landing, our upcoming PC games tracker has the dates.

We’d rather see more studios make a small, finite, handmade RPG and price it kindly than another endless loop. This is one of those, and the first week is the cheapest it has been.
