RTX 30 or newer
Minecraft’s blocky look is about to meet full path tracing on Java Edition, and the entry ticket is a GeForce RTX 30 Series card or newer, or one of NVIDIA’s new RTX Spark machines.
NVIDIA released RTX Remix for Minecraft: Java Edition as a beta alongside RTX Remix 1.6, in a GeForce News post by Andrew Burnes dated 28 October. It renders Java Edition v1.21.1 through RTX Remix with DLSS-accelerated path tracing, and NVIDIA describes the beta as open source.
RTX 30 Series or newer, and a manual install
- Operating system: Windows 10/11 (x64) or ARM64 with the latest OS updates.
- Base game: Minecraft: Java Edition 1.21.1 on an active Microsoft account.
- GeForce RTX: RTX 30 Series or newer with driver 616.92 WHQL or newer.
- RTX Spark: driver 621.01 WHQL or newer.
It isn’t a one-click affair. NVIDIA’s steps have you download a 983MB mod .zip from its GitHub page, run install.bat and pick Microsoft Launcher, then grab the Showcase World and RTX Remix Materials files from Curseforge. In game you choose the NVIDIA RTX Remix for Minecraft profile, and typing /rtx status should report True for both Render Initialized and SDK Available. If you’re on an RTX 50 card and saw video freezes after 621.01, our note on the 621.12 hotfix is worth a read first.
The beta ships with a sample world from Blockworks and a high-resolution physically based rendered materials resource pack from NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios. NVIDIA says RTX Dynamic Illumination can render thousands of shadow-casting lights at once, while RTX Global Illumination lets light bounce into and around buildings up to four times, picking up colour from stained glass or painted walls. Most of those lighting interactions depend on resource packs, and the mod is also compatible with other PBR material packs, NVIDIA says.

Water gets the same treatment. Under the surface, NVIDIA says light can be refracted and caustics rendered, and path-traced reflections cover bodies of water and Minecraft’s seas, alongside on and off-screen reflections more broadly.

Remix 1.6 adds DLSS 5 tooling and up to 6X frame generation
The Minecraft beta is the showcase, but 1.6 is the actual platform update. It adds native support for what NVIDIA calls DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering (headlined ‘DLSS 5’ on the page), which lets modders enhance scenes one by one with lighting and materials. NVIDIA’s example is Sparkles/Kim2091’s in-development Fallout 4 RTX project, where a soldier’s helmet gets better reflections and lighting response with DLSS 5 on.
Players can now use DLSS Multi Frame Generation at up to 6X, plus a DLSS Frame Generation Performance Mode (Preset C) beta, via Alt+X, Developer Graphics Settings, General. We looked at NVIDIA’s faster Frame Generation preset on 17 October. The page doesn’t say which GPUs support 6X, so check before assuming your card does. Both options, along with the DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering toggle, are also in Portal with RTX and the Half-Life 2 RTX demo, which are now playable on RTX Spark devices.
Modders also get a ComfyUI 2.0 integration that replaces legacy tools with a dedicated pipeline for generating textures and meshes, and native support for RTX Spark, which NVIDIA describes as new Windows laptops and compact PCs. To try 1.6 in an existing mod, NVIDIA points to the remix-1.6.1 downloads on GitHub, with a warning that compatibility and quality may vary until modders release official updates.
A download-and-tinker beta, and we’d treat it that way
We haven’t run any of this, and NVIDIA’s page publishes no frame rates, so we can’t tell you how the Minecraft beta behaves on any card. What we can say is that the bar is RTX 30 Series, and that the sample world and materials pack are offered as a starting point for creators. We think that makes it a curiosity to try on a weekend if you’re on a supported card, not a reason to upgrade. If you’re on an RTX 20 Series or older, it’s off the table for now.
If you’d rather see what else Minecraft’s modders are up to, our Minecraft mods page is the place to start. The real test for Remix here is whether modders fold it into the fan-favourite mods NVIDIA says it hopes to see.
