The raster gap is tiny — the platform gap is not
The RTX 3080 vs RTX 4070 debate looks close on a raster chart and lopsided everywhere else. TechPowerUp’s relative Performance Summary (the same index used on current GeForce specs pages) puts the RTX 3080 around 185 and the RTX 4070 around 189 — essentially a wash before you count watts, features, or street price (TechPowerUp relative index via current GPU specs). We have not re-benched either card ourselves.

Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 product page still lists the GeForce RTX 4070 family starting at $549 (4070 Super from $599). Amazon.com search results we opened on 4 November 2026 showed a GIGABYTE RTX 4070 WINDFORCE OC around $499.99–$529.99, while Renewed RTX 3080 10GB listings clustered roughly $469–$599 depending on board partner — verify the live tile before you buy; offers move.
Who should buy which
- Buy the 4070 (new) for lower power, warranty simplicity, and DLSS 3 Frame Generation in supported titles.
- Buy a used/Renewed 3080 only when the landed price undercuts a new 4070 by enough to offset power, noise, and missing frame-gen — and you accept used-market risk.

Encoder features also tilt newer. Ada NVENC improvements help streamers and anyone recording locally at 1440p; a 3080 still encodes fine for casual Discord clips, but the 4070 path is cleaner if content creation is half the reason you are shopping. Pair either card with a CPU that will not starve the GPU at 1440p — a soft CPU bottleneck makes the raster tie even less meaningful.
Availability is the final filter. A Renewed 3080 that ships in a week can beat a 4070 that is backordered with no ETA, but only if you accept the used-market return window and check seller ratings. New-in-box 3080 stock in 2026 is scarce enough that we treat it as a used-market problem, not a retail aisle decision.
VRAM shape matters at 1440p with mods or content creation in the background. The 3080 10GB can still be fine in many games, but the 4070 12GB plus newer memory behaviour is the safer long-horizon bet if you keep Chrome, Discord, and a recording overlay open. Neither card is a 4K path-tracing champion at ultra — step up a tier for that.
PSU reality check: many 3080 boards want two 8-pin cables and a healthier wattage floor than a 4070-class setup. If your current 650 W unit is already noisy on a 3080, moving to a 4070 can be the quieter whole-PC upgrade even when the frame-time chart is flat.
Our take
On equal money we take the 4070. The RTX 3080 vs RTX 4070 raster story is a near-tie on TPU’s index; the 4070’s efficiency and DLSS 3 stack are why the newer card usually wins the purchase, not a double-digit FPS fantasy.
