Desktop shipments fall 20%
Desktop CPU shipments fell more than 20% year-over-year in Q2 2026, according to the latest market tracking data. That’s a steep drop by any recent standard — but the more interesting number is inside it.
AMD closed the quarter with a record 34.9% share of desktop CPU units, its highest mark yet, gaining ground while the overall market contracted. Intel lost share over the same period, meaning AMD’s growth wasn’t just about riding a shrinking market evenly — it actively took share.
A shrinking desktop CPU market generally points to soft prebuilt and DIY demand, which tracks with what buyers have already been feeling on shelf prices this year. AMD picking up share inside that contraction suggests its current desktop lineup is winning head-to-head comparisons at the price points that still are moving.
Worth watching next quarter: whether AMD’s gain holds once Intel’s next refresh reaches retail, or whether this was a one-quarter blip tied to inventory timing rather than a lasting shift.
