Steam’s beta client finally makes friend notifications behave on Deck

Valve’s October 28 Steam beta fixes friend-join alerts that vanished in a rush, respects toast sound settings, and speeds up the Quick Access Menu on Deck.

Alerts that actually fire

Valve shipped a Steam Client beta on 28 October 2026 that spends most of its patch notes on one everyday annoyance: friend activity alerts that did not fire the way you set them up, especially when several mates launched games in the same breath.

We care about this more on Deck than on desktop. The Quick Access Menu is how you tweak TDP, check messages, and duck out of a game without tearing the whole session down, so a sticky or slow QAM is not a cosmetic bug. The same update claims better responsiveness there, which is the change we will actually feel session to session.

What Valve says it fixed

In the official Steam Deck news post for 28 October, Valve lists five General items and one Desktop Mode note. The General list, in Valve’s wording:

  • Fixed “friend joins a game” notifications being dropped when several friends start games within 10 seconds
  • Fixed a bug that would cause “When a friend comes online” and “When a friend joins a game” notification sounds to not respect “Show Notification Toasts” and “Play a sound when a notification toast is displayed” settings
  • Per-friend notifications now override global notification settings correctly in all cases
  • Improved Quick Access Menu responsiveness
  • Fixed a bug that caused per-friend notification settings to be ignored

Desktop Mode gets a re-styled Steam updater UI. That is the whole published changelog for this drop. There is a Steam discussion thread attached to the post if you want the comment-side noise.

Why the notification fixes matter together

Dropped “friend joins a game” toasts when several friends start within ten seconds is the kind of race you only notice when your group queues a co-op night. Sounds that ignore the global toast toggles, plus per-friend overrides that sometimes lost to the global defaults, meant the Settings screen could lie about what you would hear. Valve says both layers are aligned now: global toggles win when you want silence, and per-friend rules win when you have carved out exceptions.

None of that is a new social feature. It is Valve cleaning up rules that already existed so Deck and Big Picture players are not guessing which silent setting actually stuck. If you keep Steam on the stable channel, you will not see these fixes until they leave Preview/Beta.

How to get it, and when not to

Opt into Steam’s Beta or Preview update channel from Settings → System (on Deck) or the Steam client preferences on desktop. We already walked through the safer on-ramp and how to roll back in our guide to joining the Steam Client Beta. Stay on stable if you are mid-campaign on a title that hates client churn; beta still means Valve can land a rough edge next to a good fix.

For wider Steam platform housekeeping that already shipped to everyone, our note on Achievement Sets stopping DLC from wrecking 100% completion is still the cleaner quality-of-life win for completionists. This beta is narrower: notifications and QAM feel, not a store redesign.
