Intel is pitching Nova Lake as a desktop comeback while telling investors the PC market will shrink

Intel’s CFO says Nova Lake fills a hole in its high-end desktop range. He also says PC units fall again next year, and 18A wafers once meant for Panther Lake are heading to servers.

Desktop hype, shrinking market

Intel wants you excited about Nova Lake. In the same earnings call, it told investors that PC unit sales are heading down for a second straight year, and that some factory capacity once meant for its current Panther Lake chips is being freed up for servers.

Intel reported third-quarter 2026 results on 29 October, US Eastern time. CEO Lip-Bu Tan used his prepared remarks to say that “Nova Lake, our first Intel 18A-P client product, is tracking ahead of schedule, with design wins expected to be twice those of Panther Lake at launch.” He added: “We look forward to sharing more at CES in January.” Intel gave no launch date or specs for the chip in the results release or on the call.

Tom’s Hardware, which flagged the remark, says Intel has described 18A-P as a drop-in replacement for its 18A node, with a 9% speed improvement at iso-power or an 18% power reduction at iso-speed. Tom’s also notes that rumours have swung between Intel 18A and TSMC’s N2P, and that current speculation puts 18A-P on the SoC tile and N2P on the compute tile. Tan’s line doesn’t say which parts of the chip use 18A-P, so that question stays open.

Intel admits it had a hole in high-end desktop

CFO David Zinsner was blunter about who Nova Lake is for. Asked about product mix, he said: “we’ve had a bit of a hole in our portfolio for high-end desktop, and Nova Lake filled in that gap.” He expects “better traction on the high-end desktop as well,” and called Nova Lake “the best set of products we’ve had in a very long time.”

That’s an unusually candid description of Intel’s current desktop range, landing as AMD’s record desktop share makes headlines. It’s also a promise, not a result: there are no benchmarks, prices or release date behind it. We’d treat “twice the design wins” as a signal of how many systems OEMs are lining up, not as a speed claim, and we’d wait for independent testing before believing the rest.

The market Intel is selling into is getting smaller

Zinsner’s market outlook was grim, and he blamed memory. “We expect the 2026 PC unit TAM to decline approximately 12%, with second-half units down more than 20%,” he said. “We do not expect a sustained recovery until memory availability improves and pricing begins to normalize.” For 2027, Intel is “planning for the PC unit TAM to decline roughly 10%,” with the declines more pronounced in the first half.

The numbers match. Intel’s Client Computing and Physical AI Group made $8.1 billion in the quarter, down 5% from a year earlier, while Data Center and AI made $7.3 billion, up 78%. Tan acknowledged “near-term headwinds across the PC industry” but said “demand for our CPUs remains robust,” and Zinsner said the PC slowdown will continue “at least through the first half of next year.” On the call he still insisted that “the PC is going to go through a renaissance despite this.”

Panther Lake wafers are going to the data centre

An analyst asked whether PC weakness gave Intel room to reallocate wafers. Zinsner’s answer started with “yes.” The 18A capacity being taken offline to put Intel 3 into Oregon was “generally” meant for Panther Lake, he said, and Intel sees “the opportunity with some of that capacity freed up to go produce more data center wafers.” He added that Intel is also constrained on substrates, not just wafers.

The server chip that benefits is Granite Rapids, which runs on Intel 3 and which Tan called the biggest revenue driver in the server business. He said Intel plans to have Intel 3 in production in Oregon in the second half of next year. Servers are where Intel is pointing the rest of its attention too: its GPU D-series, the data-centre card formerly called Crescent Island, appears in the results release among the quarter’s product highlights.

If you’re planning a high-end Intel build, wait for January

There is nothing to buy yet and, on Intel’s own account, nothing to price. We’d hold off until CES, and we wouldn’t budget on cheaper memory in the meantime: Zinsner said Intel is “not optimistic about next year in terms of memory.” Owners of Core Ultra laptops have something nearer to hand in Intel’s latest Arc driver.

Intel has told investors the PC slowdown runs at least into mid-2027 while calling Nova Lake its best lineup in a long time. Both can be true, but we’d like to see the desktop chip before we believe the second half of that. CES in January is when the claim has to start meeting numbers.
