GTA 6 pre-loads two days early, so clear 212 GB now

Rockstar has moved GTA 6 digital pre-loading to 10 November, and the file needs up to 212 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. See when each opens.

Make room before Tuesday

Grand Theft Auto VI will ask for up to 212 GB of your console’s storage before you’ve played a minute, and the download now opens two days earlier than the date many pre-order pages gave. If your PS5 or Xbox is close to full, the next few days are the time to delete things, not launch morning.

Rockstar Games set out the details in a Rockstar Newswire post dated 3 November 2026. Digital pre-loading on PlayStation 5 begins on Tuesday 10 November “at midnight local time in your respective time zone,” and on Xbox Series X|S it begins “globally on Tuesday, November 10 at 12 a.m. GMT.” The game itself still launches on 19 November.

Two start times, one date

The two consoles don’t open at the same moment. Our conversion for South Africa: PS5 owners here reach midnight on 10 November at 00:00 SAST, while 12 a.m. GMT works out to 02:00 SAST, so Xbox owners wait two hours longer. The gap is different in every time zone, so check your own clock rather than assuming.

The earlier date also matters to anyone who pre-ordered on the strength of the old one. GamesRadar reports that the pre-order order form noted pre-loading opening on 12 November, and GTANews quotes Take-Two’s 24 June 2026 pre-order announcement saying players who pre-order digital versions “will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12, 2026.” Rockstar’s new post moves that to 10 November. It doesn’t say why.

212 GB is a lot of Series S

Rockstar’s wording is that the pre-load file “will require up to 212 GB depending on your device, so make sure you’ve got ample space to begin pre-loading as soon as possible.” It hasn’t said which console needs the full amount, so we’d clear all 212 GB and be pleasantly surprised if it turns out to be less. GamesRadar adds that pre-load downloads and final install sizes can differ noticeably.

The fan site GTANews has done the sums, and they’re its own figures, not Rockstar’s: 212 GB is about 31.8% of the 667 GB it counts as usable on a launch PS5, and 58.2% of the 364 GB it counts on an Xbox Series S. On those numbers, that’s more than half a Series S’s usable drive for one game. We think Series S owners with a full library should start deleting now, because nobody wants to be uninstalling something else while a 200 GB transfer sits waiting.

Auto-download is a separate switch

Getting the file early only helps if the console actually fetches it. GTANews quotes Rockstar’s support FAQ, which says that on PlayStation 5 players “must have auto-downloads enabled, and their console must be powered on or powered off to Rest Mode.” On Xbox Series X|S the quoted wording is “automatic updates enabled, and their console must be powered on or in Sleep mode.”

In other words, a power state alone isn’t enough; the setting has to be on as well. VideoCardz, citing Rockstar’s updated support page, says players can enable automatic downloads to have the game installed before launch.

Boxed copies, the poster and PC

Code-in-box versions for both consoles “should be available from retailers beginning November 12,” according to Rockstar, so boxed buyers still start two days after the digital crowd. VideoCardz reports those packages contain a download code rather than a disc. It’s a quiet end to a run-up that began in earnest with Rockstar’s launch trailer on 15 October.

Rockstar is also adding “an official printable Grand Theft Auto VI cover art poster and map of Leonida as a free digital download” to the official site on 19 November. A double-sided physical version will come “shortly after launch” from the Rockstar Store, for $0.99 on its own or as a free gift with any purchase there.

Rockstar’s post covers only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It hasn’t announced a PC version or a PC date. If you want a sense of what all that space is for, Edge’s 90 unscripted minutes with the game is one place to start, and Activision’s CMO calling GTA 6 one of 2026’s two biggest games shows how much is riding on it.

GTANews notes Rockstar hasn’t published a day-one patch size, so even 212 GB might not be the whole bill. Our advice is to clear a little more than the number on the box, and to check the auto-download setting before Tuesday rolls round.
