Pricier than any Ally yet

Asus used Gamescom 2026 to open preorders for the ROG Xbox Ally X20, its new flagship gaming handheld, confirming a standalone price of $1,299.99 ahead of an October 15 launch. It’s the priciest entry the Ally line has produced yet, and the announcement lands alongside a bundle option that pushes the total well past two grand for buyers who want the full package.

The X20’s headline upgrade is its 7.4-inch 1080p OLED display running at 120Hz with HDR support, paired with a translucent shell that shows off the internals, a first for the line. Under the hood, Asus specced it with an 80Wh battery, 1TB of storage, 24GB of DDR5 RAM, and Wi-Fi 6. The standalone unit runs $1,299.99 in the US (£1,299 in the UK, C$1,899 in Canada), while a bundle adding ROG’s XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses and a Pelican case lists at $2,499.

That price puts the X20 well ahead of its own predecessors. The original Asus ROG Ally X launched in July 2024 at $799.99. Last year’s ROG Xbox Ally X, the Xbox-branded model built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, launched at $999.99, a $200 premium over the 2024 model. The X20 adds another $300 on top of that, meaning the flagship handheld’s price has climbed 62% in two years, from $799.99 to $1,299.99, even before factoring in the AR bundle.

The X20 was first teased at Computex 2026 as part of Asus’s broader ROG Edition 20 refresh, and its arrival coincides with the same memory-cost pressures currently driving up GPU prices industry-wide. With 24GB of DDR5 and 1TB of storage both called out as spec bumps over prior models, rising DRAM and NAND costs are a plausible contributor to the jump, on top of the OLED panel and new cooling hardware Asus is charging for directly.

Preorders are live now for the October 15 ship date, but buyers put off by the price aren’t without options: last year’s $999.99 ROG Xbox Ally X remains in production as a cheaper alternative with a standard LCD panel and less RAM. Anyone considering the X20 itself should hold off on judgment until independent reviews land closer to launch; the OLED panel and cooling redesign are real upgrades, but at $500 over the 2024 original, they’ll need to earn that gap on their own merits.
